What is Open Source?

Open source refers to source code that is publicly accesible and allows anyone to inspect, modify or learn from it. Open source projects encourages collaboration and the freedom to use the software for any purpose you wish.

What is Hacktoberfest?

Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open-source software by DigitalOcean that encourages participation in giving back to the open-source community. Developers get involved by completing pull requests, participating in events, and donating to open source projects. During this event, anyone can support open source by contributing changes and earn limited-edition swag.

How to Contribute to Open Source

Make meaningful open-source contributions by improving the code quality of thousands of open-source projects you love. Making your first contribution can often be intimidating. Start with easy, but meaningful, improvements to your favorite project - and then dig deeper.

Create a GitHub account

If you don't have one, create a GitHub or GitLab account and register on the official Hacktoberfest website.

Set up your Profile

Set up your profile, read our participation rules and values, find the project(s) you'd like to contribute to.

Start contributing!

Track your pull request progress on your profile page, submit at least four pull requests to any public GitHub or GitLab repository that is classified with the Hacktoberfest topic.
